Cash on Delivery: A Trust Builder or Profit Killer?
In Indian e-commerce, Cash on Delivery (CoD) still rules — especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
It’s the bridge between trust and transaction.
But this convenience comes at a cost:
- Hidden “handling fees” quietly added at checkout
- Higher RTO rates — sometimes 40–50% for CoD orders
- Up to 50% higher operational costs than prepaid orders
- Refund delays that test customer patience
What began as a trust mechanism is slowly turning into a margin drain for brands and sellers. And dark patterns like undisclosed CoD charges or “only 1 left” urgency tactics risk eroding consumer confidence even further.
The way forward:
- Be transparent with CoD fees
- Simplify refunds
- Build long-term trust over short-term conversions
- Because in e-commerce, trust is the only currency that compounds.
